Street food is one of the chief attractions of any Christmas market. Krakow has plenty on offer! We weren’t there long enough to try everything, but it all sure smelled good.
Grzaniec, or mulled wine, is first on the list. The Polish version is very nice, with spices and orange slices. The perfect drink on a cold, windy day.
Of course there are pierogies (filled dumplings) in abundance.Oscypek is a salty, smoked sheep’s milk cheese that is made only in the Tatras area of Poland (though faux versions are made elsewhere). The cheese is molded into different shapes and sold as a gift item.At the market, oscypek is heated up over coals and served with a dollop of fruit jam on top.I would like to say that it was yummy, but in fact, it was it little too sheep-y for me.Get yourself a kebab or a big old pig knuckle here. (The grill smelled amazing.)Slices of bread spread with smalec (lard) are a staple street food in Krakow. See the crock with a paddle sticking out of it? Yep, that there’s pig fat.Traditional soups, including zurek (sour rye) which really IS yummy. Probably my favorite Polish specialty, especially when served with sliced kielbasa. And for dessert, apples and pears dipped in chocolate!
