The best thing about the Garmisch-Partenkirchen area, in my opinion, are the many mountain hiking trails that are open even in the winter. The scenery is spectacular. Even better, the trails are dotted with “huttes” that offer warmth, bathrooms and yummy food. The Partnach Gorge (Partnachklamm) was closed during our last visit, but fortunately, open this time. This gorge was cut over millions of years by a stream through the mountains surrounding Garmisch. It is over 260 feet deep in some places, and was once used for logging. Now it is a tourist attraction and well worth a visit, especially in winter, when giant icicles hang over the roaring waters. We also hiked up mountains a couple of times on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Except for a few slippery/icy spots, the hiking was fine. And, the huttes were open for hot chocolate 🙂
