More consequences to my inadvertently viral contraception rant. Today, I learned that I am a “progressive feminist.” And that apparently really annoys some people. From a blog post that quotes me extensively:

Progressive Feminists.  Often demanders of free contraception and morning after pills for all menstruating females and unrestricted abortion without parental consent (including late term and for sex selection), these women are intensely earnest and often privileged.  They fight along the same battle lines drawn by Simone de Beauvoir and Betty Friedan.  Trend One women favor terms like “inner raging feminist,” “pissed off” and “outraged.” 

Well, yeah, I’m pissed off. I think I made that pretty clear 🙂

To tell you the truth, though, I didn’t know I was a feminist at all until a few weeks ago. Now in my mid-forties, I am one of the lucky generation that just doesn’t have to worry about it all that much—or so we thought. (Maybe that’s one reason I’ve been a stay-at-home mom for twenty-plus years!)

I’ve never read anything by Simone de Beauvoir and Betty Friedan, or at least I don’t think I have. So, I don’t know exactly what those “battle lines” were. But if they involved men deciding whether or not women should have access to contraception, then OK. I would clearly be against that.

I definitely didn’t know that I was in favor of late-term and sex-selection abortion. My goodness, that seems like quite an inference to draw from my previous posts.

It seems to me, from what I saw on this blog (some of which, like this post on The Mother of God and Womanhood, definitely goes over my head) that it is attempting to define some specifically Catholic form of feminism.

Which is fine. You can be whatever kind of feminist you like. But I’m not Catholic. So, I frankly don’t get what that should have to do with me. Or my personal access to birth control.
