The Big Cover-Up

So, over two months after moving into our apartment our slipcovers arrived. Bye-bye blue brocade!

FWIW, I ordered from Sure Fit. They screwed up the order the first time–their system couldn’t deal with a DPO address. But, when I called them about it, they were very nice: apologizing and offering me 10 percent off plus free shipping on a replacement order. Can’t argue with that.

I am not crazy about the slipcovers.  They are kind of flimsy. When I think “duck cloth” I think a jeans-weight fabric, not this linen-y wrinkly stuff. But are they better than blue brocade and stained beige polyester? Oh yeah. Not to mention covering up the previous tenant’s dog hair. I like dogs, I really do. But only in the FS would a non dog-owner spend as much time vacuuming up dog hair as I have in this lifetime. And that’s all I have to say on the subject.

The Dreaded Blue Brocade Sofa. It's blue and sort of taupe-y. And polyester brocade. I just don't think there is anything else I can say about it.

Now, you have to admit, this is better.

OK, a little frilly, but better. Big picture, people. PS, the non-functional window shades are being replaced any day now...

Weird place under the stairs with extra dining chairs and essentially useless table. For leaving calling cards? Heck if I know.

A little better, I think.
A little better, I think.

These are the first slipcovers I have ever bought. And there certainly seems to be a lot of tucking involved. Not to mention ironing.  But is it worth it?  At the end of the day, I think so. I have nothing against well-used furniture. I’ve lived with it all my life. But I would like to be the one who picked it out and used it. It’s just different when you are living with someone else’s stuff. And someone else’s dog hair. The End.

  1. oh lord those blue sofas are some of the worst I’ve seen- why Drexel? WHY?

I’ve seen people with sewing talent have great results tailoring their slipcovers to make them easier to put back on after washing. I also like the stretchy kind I showcased here but they are hard to find for the smaller arms of our Drexel pieces.

Glad you are feeling happier with your home. I recently rearranged my livign room and am also feeling mroe settled.

  2. Our drexel couches are pretty great. . . orange and nubby (okay, the orange isn’t for everyone, but it’s a neutral sort of orange!) Very kid friendly, stain resistant and NOT funky, polyester brocade! Just to give you hope that if you tire of your great, new slipcovers, MAYBE at your next post you’ll have something more liveable!

  3. I’m seeing more and more of the new furniture and hoping our next post housing will be blessed with it! In the meantime, slipcovers DO make a major difference. I don’t actually like slipcovers because they NEVER fit right… esp. NOT on floppy funky drexel furniture. Not even the stretchy material, which is what I have. It just can’t cope! But I have found that Surefit has some of the best covers, and at a fair price too. They hold up (despite my washing them constantly… I mean, they do wear and fade after a year or so, but at least I can keep them washed!). I like your covers… they cover up the old and blah (and dog hair… 😦 !), make the floppy sad sagginess look much more pulled together (I have the SAME sofas and fabric… I know first hand… ), and have added some nice personalized color to your home! 🙂 Congrats!
